Time and Time Again
by J.B. Hogan
|Stephen White is a likeable nerd, a software engineer in the little town of Nevada, Missouri. He works at Animatec, a startup graphics company, with his best friend Tom Harris and the bright and beautiful Lisa Backman, for whom Stephen longs semi-tragically.
Stephen is a late-twentyish, lumpy fellow trying to detach himself from his less-than-approving parents. Sometimes he goes caving above the nearby Marais des Cygnes River and he once went rock hunting in Arizona. Mostly, though, he prefers to plop down on the couch in his small apartment and watch television or read a sci-fi book.
Like many of us, he finds solace in food and drink. But sometimes, afterwards, he finds himself becoming light-headed, tired, sleepy….
Waking then becomes an adventure, as he finds himself in completely unexpected times and locations. On a murderous run with 1860s outlaws, at a Russian mock execution, beside the stations of the Via Dolorosa – hanging precariously between confusion and understanding, between action and passivity.
Are these worlds real, is he really there, do the people there see him? And when he reawakens in his own world, some small piece of where he has been has come back with him—maybe a feather, a guitar pick, a spent shell casing.
All Stephen White knows is that he will not know when the next journey will begin. Or what it will be like. But he is certain there will be another and there will be no rhyme or reason to it—and no expectation that the episodes will stop. They’re just something he has to deal with.
